Acreage increased by 16.5% last year

Strawberries more often grown under protection

In Lower Saxony, strawberries are increasingly grown under walk-in protective covers or in greenhouses. As reported by the State Statistics Office (LSN) on Thursday in Hanover, the acreage increased last year by 16.5 percent to 144 hectares. Of this area, around 2300 tonnes of strawberries, a good seven percent of the total yield in Lower Saxony (31,000 tonnes) was harvested.

Open field: Reduced cultivation area
Totally, the strawberry harvest in the state has been declining for several years. A major reason for this is the reduced acreage in the field. The yield area decreased from 3,400 hectares in 2015 to just under 2,870 hectares last year.
