In Boxberg near Weißwasser the cucumber harvest is in full swing. Around 1.2 million pieces are picked each year. Until the green fruits are ripe, they need a lot of heat. It comes from a nearby lignite-fired power plant.
Planting was one month ago. Now, the cucumber harvest in Boxberg near Weißwasser is in full swing. The vegetables from Upper Lusatia are available at farm sales and from greengrocers in the region, as announced by Growers coop Boxberg. "A total of 1.2 million cucumbers are picked each year", said greenhouse manager Frederik Rink MDR SACHSEN. Every six months, they switch between greenhouses. That's why the cucumbers are always in season. The next cucumber planting is planned for June, when the plants from January are no longer relevant.
Regular and mini cucumbers
In January, 14,000 regular cucumbers and 17,000 mini-cucumbers were set up in a 1,2-hectare glasshouse. The greenhouses are heated with waste heat from the neighboring Boxberg lignite-fired power plant. The vegetables need a temperature of around 20 degrees Celsius day and night.
