After successful use in some European countries like Italy and the Netherlands, Lepinox Plus is now also approved for use in Germany. The agent contains bacterium strain EG 2348 Bacillus thuringiensis. After oral uptake by caterpillars, it triggers a perforation of their intestinal wall, it says.
The caterpillars stop eating immediately and will die after a few days. The approval exists for use against butterfly and owl caterpillars in fruit, wine, hops and vegetables." It is now listed for organic farming; there is no waiting period required," says a spokeswoman for e-nema GmbH. The company, based in Schwentinental near Kiel, handles the distribution of the protective agent.
