Spain: Reduction of fruit exports and growth of veg shipments in September

Spanish fruit exports have fallen by 18% in terms of volume and by 10% in terms of value in September compared to the same month last year, totaling 342,032 tonnes and 353 million Euro. Meanwhile, vegetable exports have grown by 10% in terms of volume and by 12% in terms if value, totaling 220,406 tons and 196 million Euro, according to data from the Department of Customs and Special Taxes of the Tax Agency, processed by FEPEX.

The decline in fruit exports in September has been largely due to stone fruit, with peaches recording a 26% drop in terms of volume and a 4% one in terms of value, totaling 51,034 tonnes and 43.4 million Euro, and nectarines falling by 26% in terms of volume and by 3% in terms of value, standing at 50,700 tons and 45 million Euro. Plum sales also fell by 18% in terms of volume and by 3% in terms of value, totaling 15,749 tons and 18.2 million Euro, and apricot sales fell by 5% in terms of volume and by 21% in terms of value, with 4,615 tons and 5 million Euro. In September, apple, pear and melon exports also fell. For FEPEX, the drop in exports this month is attributable to the lower production in most areas due to adverse weather conditions.

By contrast, the export of vegetables in September grew by 10% in terms of volume and by 12% in terms of value, totaling 220,406 tons and 197 million Euro. The most noteworthy figures were achieved by onions, with 39,735 tons (+31%) and 13.2 million Euro (+16.5%); cucumbers, with 32,007 tons (+3.5%) and 29.5 million Euro (+64%); tomatoes, with 29,569 tons (+49%) and 33 million Euro (+16%) and peppers, with 28,415 tons (+20%) and 36.2 million Euro (+25%).
