Turkey: Tomato prices start to rise again

The price of tomatoes has started to rise again in Antalya, the center for tomato production in Turkey. In the wholesale market, tomato prices had dropped below 0.60 USD per kg, however now they have again risen to above 0.70 USD per kg.

Tomato prices had increased by 35.2 % in September and that was the product with highest price increase in the market place.

Assessing current tomato prices, Antalya Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Market Association Chairman, Nevzat Akcan, said: “This price is making our growers very happy but it creates dissatisfaction on the consumer side. However if the price drops below 0.40 USD per kg, our growers will not be able to earn any money and they will begin to halt production in upcoming seasons. So in order to keep growers financially sustainable, the price has to remain above this aforementioned price point. Production costs are very high for growers right now and recently the prices jumped a little due to high demand in the Middle East export market but it should level off a bit in time.”
