Spain: Almeria taking advantage of Morocco's lower zucchini production

This season, the supply of Moroccan zucchini in European supermarkets is expected to be lower, according to the Prices and Markets Observatory of the Government of Andalusia.

At this time, Morocco, which is the main competitor of Almeria's production, does not have significant amounts of zucchini.

In Agadir, one of the three main producing areas of Morocco, the acreage devoted to zucchini has been reduced this season. Industry experts point out that most of that region's zucchini production is grown in the open ground, and the high incidence of the New Delhi virus has forced many to uproot their plantations.

This lack of Moroccan production, together with the fact that Almeria won't have a very large volume, partly because it is in the transition period from early to late crops, and partly due to the incidence of the virus, is resulting in fair prices for the producers.

To all this we must add that the Central European campaign is practically finished, so any goods hitting the market are sold very quickly.
