India: Growers see tomato prices drop below labor costs

Because of a recent bumper crop, there has been a severe drop in tomato prices in the Pune produce market. Farmers were forced to sell tomatoes at Rs 5 to 7 per kilogramme (€0.07-0.09) on Sunday.

The prices fell to Rs 5 per kg from Rs 10-12 per kg on October 12. A 14-kilogram box of tomatoes went for Rs 95 on Sunday.

“Rates are always based on demand and supply of the market. … After October 10, APMC Pune has witnessed a bumper arrival of tomatoes, which is main reason for the downfall of prices,” said Vilas Bhujbal, president of the Chhatrapati Shivaji market yard traders' and agents' association.
