Photo report Horti ASIA Bangkok

The development of the Southeast Asian horticultural industry is in full swing. While Thai growers have been in touch with greenhouse techniques for over a decade now, growers from other countries are also getting more and more interested in opportunities to improve their growing business. Therefor the interest in new varieties, greenhouse techniques and efficiency solutions attracted great attention last week during the Horti Asia.

It seems like the exhibition has found its position in the horticultural industry. After a postponed edition in 2016, last year the exhibition was combined for the first time with the AgriTechnica Asia, and this successful collaboration was continued in the 2018 edition. In 2020 the biennial exhibitions will be combined as well, setting the date for May 2020.

But why would you visit the exhibition? Visitors to the exhibition hail from the Middle East, India and even Australia, but also the Southeast Asian market itself is in development. With retailers becoming more and more important, the demand for safely grown produce is on the rise. With Thailand as a vanguard and Vietnam as a runner-up, new waves of interest arise from countries like Indonesia and the Philippines. Also the vertical farms were talked about: with Singapore nearby, it cannot be missed - though in general the foil greenhouses were key.

In Bangkok 120 exhibitors from the horticultural industry united. Breeders showed their developments in the market and it can be seen how they focus both on breeding fruits and vegetables specifically for the tropics, as well as helping growers work with varieties from other regions.

Also well-represented were the greenhouse builders. Although the Southeast Asian market is not the most important market to most of them, they see the developments and also help these developments taking place: sharing knowledge and not only building greenhouses, but helping growers with the optimization of their company and the crop.
