US (CA): Lettuce production completes transition to Salinas

The production of lettuce is now maintaining steady volume after weather events several weeks ago caused some disruption to the market. Supplies have since stabilized and production has now fully transitioned out of the desert regions and into the northern California growing districts.

"We have recently transitioned our growing operation back up to the bountiful Salinas Valley," said Nicole Zapata of Misionero. "We have had a smooth transition from Yuma back up to Salinas and supplies have remained consistent. Misionero has whole leaf varieties (Green Leaf, Romaine, etc.) as well as leafy green varieties (Spring Mix, Kales, Arugula, Spinach, etc.) and the demand has remained good on all."

Peel and reseal packaging
Misionero offers 7oz retail packages of whole leaf lettuce in clamshells as part of their lineup. Called 'Green Life', the product line offers varieties that are already washed and trimmed. Zapata said they have recently updated the packaging and are looking to add some new varieties soon.

"Our Garden Life retail line includes red romaine, romaine, green leaf lettuce, lettuce boats, as well as the perfect deli leaf," she said. "We recently transitioned Garden Life to Peel and Reseal packaging. By transitioning to Peel and Reseal packaging we were able to reduce the plastic used by 20 percent while still maximizing freshness. We also have some new ideas in the works for our other product lines."

Attendance at CPMA
Misionero will be exhibiting at CPMA this week, showcasing their various retail prepared salad products. Canada is an important market for them and the show gives Misionero an opportunity to meet with their customers there.

"CPMA gives us an opportunity to touch base as a team with the Canadian market, show our entire line and what we have to offer that is new," Zapata explained. "Visitors to our booth can expect to find the entire line of Garden Life, Earth Green and Green Wave products. We have some new innovative products to share with attendees and we look forward to seeing everyone there!"

Misionero will be located at Booth # 750.
