Because of the combination of industrial residual heat from the harbor combined with existing and new geothermal energy sources the entire Westland could do without gas. In this manner Warmtebedrijf Westland, the greenhouse farming companies and the industrial companies in the harbor could jointly contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions and counter climate change, and also solve the earthquake problems stemming from the gas extraction in Groningen. Minister Wiebes (Economical Affairs and Climate) told the large companies in January that they will have "to stop using gas from Groningen at short notice."
Gas from Groningen
Warmtebedrijf Westland is working together with grid operator Alliander Duurzame Gebiedsontwikkeling and Evides Industriewater to realize the infrastructure and making the residual heat from the harbor available. The initiative meets the request LTO Glaskracht Nederland made to Minister Wiebes of Economical Affairs and Climate. According to LTO Glaskracht the greenhouse farming companies can help reduce the use of gas from Groningen in this manner. At the same time 900 kilotons of CO2 are saved annually. Greenhouse farming companies now mainly use co-generation installations to produce energy relatively efficiently. A number of companies also use heat from geothermal energy sources.
