Mexico: Habanero pepper consolidates in Tabasco

According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (Sagarpa), Habanero pepper production in Tabasco, which currently has 800 hectares devoted to this product, is increasing.

In 2017, the region produced 2,671 tons of peppers. The Habanero pepper achieved the highest commercial value, but there are communities in the 17 municipalities in which small producers harvest Dulce and Güero peppers, stated Antonio Rodriguez Jimenez, research professor at the Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco (UJAT).

According to the researcher, this crop is growing in Tabasco, which currently has around 800 hectares devoted to this crop, an area that is expected to increase in the coming months until it exceeds one thousand hectares approximately.

According to the specialist, the consumption of fish and shellfish in Tabasco during Easter represents a great opportunity for producers of the fishing sector and for producers of chili, as there is a high demand for this product.

This crop is original to Mexico and very important worldwide, it is even considered as a symbol that identifies Mexicans.
