Italy: Red San Marzano tomatoes deserve more recognition

"Our company was established in the early 1980s. We started working in the business when we were kids and, now that we're older, we know what it takes for the year to be good, even though you never stop learning," explains Giorgio Modica, who runs the company together with his brother Gianfilippo.

"We have always grown red San Marzano tomatoes. In the beginning, we cultivated other products as well, but then realised we were among the only ones to grow this variety in our area and decided to focus on it. We made this decision in 1990, when we covered 14,000 sqm. Over the years, we managed to involve other companies and now cover 140,000 sqm in total."

"Two years ago, together with our partners, we decided to set up a brand that could make us immediately recognisable. 'll San Marzano' is appreciated by both our partners and retailers in general."

'Il San Marzano' tomatoes have oblong non-uniform fruits of a bright red colour. The flesh is compact with not many seeds, while the skin is thin. The entire production is of around 1100 tons a year and holds the GlobalGAP certification.

"Flavour is exceptional and shelf-life is enviable even without cold storage. The soil and weather conditions in this area make this product exceptional."

Most of the production is destined to markets in northern Italy but retailer demand is good as well. The company recently started exporting and feedback has been good so far.
