Up to 50% less production expected:

German strawberry growers challenged by bad weather

A sizeable majority of German strawberry producers have had 30-50% less production this season due to the bad weather at the beginning of the season.

Markus Hofmann from Hegepflanzen GmbH said that demand is good, as usual, for this time of year. The same can't be said for the prices, which are higher than usual because of the shortage in supply.

"As far as I know, we had only one week where the prices collapsed, during the first warmer period in May. Since then, prices have stabilised." shared Markus.

A supplier of strawberry plants, Markus said that the Clery variety from Italy is still the most popular for both open field and tunnel production There are still a lot of Everbearers on the market, and the market continues to grow for them. The Portola variety from California is still going strong, but new varieties like Murano from Italy and Harmony from Vissers/NL are becoming popular.

"We have a small production of organic strawberries, but production is very small when you compare it with the entire production in Germany. However, consumers do prefer organic when it is available." said Markus.
