Tecnici Network: strategies and training for the Sicilian greenhouse sector

Tackling the complex issues of the agricultural and greenhouse worlds can be tough if there is no common strategy.

Common problems are often due to the stiffness of those who should help solve them and are not agile enough to follow the dynamics of a specific disease. This means that those working in fields everyday (technicians and producers) have no tools to tackle emergencies and problems which may appear simple but might worsen quickly!

This is what was behind the idea of creating an association made up of technicians to divulge notions and useful information for the greenhouse sector.

'Tecnici Network' was set up in 2015 and now has 80 members who meet up every month to discuss the latest issues. We talked to President Sergio Rizzo to better understand how things work.

"We have been meeting regularly to discuss issues strictly connected to agriculture. Operators come mainly from Gela to Siracusa, although some of them work in Catania as well."

The topics depend on the issues technicians need to solve. This time, Maria Di Martino, researcher for the Istitutodi Patologia at the University of Catania, discussed bacteriosis.

"This meeting was the second of three. The third one will focus on prophylaxis, protocols and defence strategies and will be followed by a discussion."

The association also has the objective of promoting local produce as well as the respect of regulations concerning primary production and commercialisation.

Ideas and experiences are exchanged through the organisation of congresses, conventions, seminars, conferences, training courses, meetings, internships, trips and company tours.

"I would like to point out that all Sicilian technicians with a degree or diploma can join the network as well as business owners and their employees, public employees, suppliers of technical tools and professionals. Our organisation is open to anyone wishing to contribute to our cause."
