China: Dutch cultivation technology results in high yields of tomatoes

In the farmer's market, tomatoes of a smaller size (also called cherry tomatoes) have always been an online craze. Their sour and sweet taste is loved by the citizens and many farming households became rich by growing them. In the model region for contemporary agriculture on the banks of the Yellow Sea, there's a 'smart vegetable plantation factory'. This 'green silicon valley' in Qingdao (Shandong province) also produces these small tomatoes, and uses advanced techniques for growing them. The tomato plants can grow up to 20 meters high there and one hectare can produce close to 2.667 kilograms of tomatoes.

"From building greenhouses to cultivating the plants, all the techniques used are originally from the Netherlands. We have only slightly improved and adjusted them to the reality in Qingdao," explains the person in charge, Tang Mingtao. The main reason why we are called a 'smart vegetable plantation factory' is because our technology is completely automated. On top of that, the methods we use to prevent physical damage to our plants and to prevent organisms destroying them are completely in line with the law, which guarantees the safety and health of our vegetables.
