Swedish project studies year-round cultivation of tasty strawberries with LEDs

An innovation group consisting of experts in strawberry cultivation, plant lighting, plant research, food science and sensoric analysis, are working on combining greenhouse cultivation of Swedish strawberries with LED lighting technology. The goal - year-round cultivation of strawberries with the preserved taste, aroma and color as the Swedish strawberry is known for.

The Swedish summer grown strawberry distinguishes itself from mid- and southern European strawberries with its sweet taste, red color and often smaller size. Due to the lack of light in northern Europe for large parts of the year, supplementary lighting is needed in greenhouse cultivation for light loving crops such as the strawberry.

Heliospectra's intelligent LED lighting solutions has an adjustable spectrum and illuminates within a narrow wavelength range. According to the LED manufacturer, this is of interest as there are indications that it is possible to control the production of aroma and health-promoting substances in plants by illuminating them with well-defined spectrum. As Heliospectra develops and markets lighting systems based on LEDs whose intensity and wavelengths can be continuously controlled, different spectrum compositions can be tested and optimized.

The innovation group is now at planning stage working on the next step for a larger project.

Participating experts
  • Strawberry cultivation - Hushållningssällskapet
  • Plant lighting - Heliospectra
  • Plant research - SLU
  • Food science (Sensory analysis) - Rise
  • Food science (Nutritional analysis) - Chalmers
The innovation group has received funds from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
