Greenyard's Oliver Grunert obtains PhD on Grow Bag research

On Monday the 23th of January, Oliver Grunert (Greenyard) successfully defended his PhD on “Microbial managed organic growing media for greenhouse horticulture” at Ghent University.

The organic Grow Bag is an efficient and sustainable way of growing tomatoes.

During 4 years he investigated the interactions between the microbial community structure associated with the organic Grow Bag and in relation to the growth of tomato plants and yield and quality of the tomatoes. This diverse microbial community associated with the organic growing medium seems to be the key in defending the plants against plant pathogens and supplying the necessary nutrients to the plants.

Thanks to his scientific insights, Greenyard is able to improve the basis of a healthier future.

The Grow Bag has been nominated for the Innovation Award at Fruit Logistica.
