Retailer-backed coalition launches campaign against border tax
A broad coalition of lobbyists for retailers like Wal-Mart Stores Inc., is launching a battle against a proposed US tax on imports, aiming to sway both federal lawmakers and American consumers. The Retail Industry Leaders Association and more than 120 other trade groups are backing the campaign, called “Americans for Affordable Products,” which will center on how a border-adjusted tax could increase prices for consumers. Nosh buyer eyes expansion opportunities in NZ and abroad -

A consortium of New Zealand investors, who do not want to be named, have bought troubled gourmet supermarket brand Nosh for $4 million. For now, it would be a regular service for shoppers, and there were plans to expand this "great" brand within the country and overseas. Veritas Investments, the listed company which owns Nosh, said on Thursday it would sell Nosh to a company called Gosh Holding, and use the money to repay debt to ANZ. (stuff.co.nz)

Russia's Dixy group sees 14% sales growth in 2016
Russian retailer Dixy Group has announced sales growth of 14% in the 12 months of 2016, totalling RUB 311.2 billion (€4.8 billion). In a statement released mid-January, the company said that like-for-like sales grew 4.4%. In 2016, the retailer opened 94 new stores, and added an additional 5% selling space year on year, totalling 952,532 square metres. Average basket spend increased by 3.5%. (esmmagazine.com)

UK: Salad producer based underground seals supermarket deal

A farm based in a former air raid shelter beneath a London high street has begun selling its salads to a major supermarket. Growing Underground is selling five salad mixes in its first range through online supermarket Ocado in the first major retail deal for the five-year-old business. The Ocado deals come as supermarkets struggled to source salad ingredients, courgettes, broccoli and cabbage after a cold snap on the continent hit suppliers in Spain and Italy. (home.bt.com)

Croatia's anti-trust regulator approves Spar's acquisition of Billa
Croatia's anti-trust regulator, AZTN, said on Wednesday it has approved the acquisition of local retailer Billa, trade and services company Billa nekretnine and Minaco by Austria-based Spar AG. Spar AG, via its local unit Spar Hrvatska, will take over the business operations of Billa, Billa nekretnine and Minaco, in their entirety, AZTN said in a statement. (seenews.com)

UK retailer Morrisons has announced the passing of its 'life president' and former chairman, Sir Ken Morrison. Dixy Group opens 8 New Victoria supermarkets in Russia
Dixy Group has announced that it has opened eight new Victoria supermarkets in Kaliningrad, Russia, at the locations of former Sedmoy Kontinent stores. In addition to the standard Victoria range, the new stores will offer fresh produce, such as tomatoes, potted herbs and mushrooms. The fresh produce will be sourced mainly - up to 90% in some categories - from suppliers in the Kaliningrad Region. (esmmagazine.com)
