UK retail waiting for British greenhouse produce
Over the last three weeks, Spanish cherry tomatoes were available on the shelves of retailers Marks & Spencer, Waitrose, Aldi and Lidl. Moroccan cherry tomatoes were offered by Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda, Morrisons. Also Co-op changes its supply from Spain to Morocco last week. There has been no significant changes in pricing over the last month, only Tesco offered Moroccan cherry tomatoes on promotion for 79 pence per pack in the first two weeks of December.
Morocco and Spain are also the major suppliers of cucumbers to the UK retail this time. The average pricing of the cucumbers has seen a small increase, for example at Sainsbury and Waitrose, which increased its price with 5p from 45p to 50p. Also Aldi increased the price of a cucumber from 42p to 44 p last week. Perhaps this has got to do with the rainy circumstances in Spain.
And after 4 weeks of strictly offering Spanish bell peppers, the first Israeli bell peppers can be found at Sainsbury this week. Also the prices of the bell peppers have seen a small increase over the last two weeks and average pricing is currently about 99 pence for a traffic light.
