LED fixtures for Southern Illinois University greenhouse

Donations to buy new LED greenhouse lights for Southern Illinois University goes well beyond the $3,000 investment made by a novel crowdfunding project — they also buy students classroom time.

The lights are integral component to a $15,000 project by the College of Agricultural Sciences to convert a former laboratory space into a small teaching greenhouse on campus. The college this summer worked with a new fundraising tool, SalukiFunder.siu.edu, a website that collects online donations for specific university projects.

The space is scheduled to be ready for spring semester classes and immediate use by an estimated 60 students in mid-January.

“But this project is much more than providing new technology in the lights for the students to work this,” said Karen Jones, Department of Plant, Soil and Agricultural Systems chair.

The presence of the new greenhouse space means students no longer have to be transported by van to the college’s farms 10 minutes away. Students also will be able to drop in and use the live materials to study.
