UK: Organic production of new RZ cherry variety at Tower Nurseries

UK organic grower Tower Nurseries focuses entirely on the organic production of cherry tomatoes. This season the company is growing two newcomers from Rijk Zwaan: 4904 m² with Genery RZ (72-192 RZ) and 4904 m² with 72-191 RZ. Like the breeder, the grower focuses on flavor and fruit weight.

Grower Marek Konopka tested Genery and was immediately convinced. "A great addition to the cherry tomato segment. The great sweet taste, combined with the promise of a high production capacity, made us decide to plant the new variety on January 20th. The plants had been propagated by the Grow Group in the Netherlands and were sowed on November 21st. We started with a planting distance of 2.3 plants/m² and doubled this to 2.3 plants/m² in mid-February."

Sufficient vigor
"At the end of July we still saw a pretty strong crop. Genery has sufficient vigor to nicely get through the summer. The plants have been planted directly in the soil and need to get through the season without chemical pest management. We’re seeing some mildew and lamentably it looks like the heads break a bit easier when we are working the crop. I’m not sure whether this is a breed characteristic or a result of our organic cultivation method."
