Promising results in greenhouse strawberries

Disease free irrigation with copper water treatment

As strawberry cultivation is seeing a transition from the open field towards greenhouse production in trays and on benches, many growers are not only challenged by new cultivation methods, but also by new diseases. Phytopthora is one of them; it's known for being a major problem in strawberries and other soft fruits. For this reason, Dutch growers have now trialed the Aqua-Hort, an electrolysis system based on the use of copper to treat irrigation water against fungus and bacteria.

"Propagation trials by some strawberry growers in Holland give good results. Even the most sensitive varieties have no losses, while the areas without Aqua-Hort treated irrigation water show major losses", said Aksel de Lasson of Aqua-Hort. According to him the system has proven to be successful in other crops as well lately.

Young plants.

"Young plant producers are as always the biggest group of Aqua-Hort users, also last year they bought the most units". According to de Lasson, the producers of vegetable young plants in particular have shown more interest. "Some big propagators installed machines last year and several others are in the exploration process. Many of them, like the tomato and cucumber propagators, use inactive media for growing."

Coryne Bacteria

Another remarkable result at a customer of Aqua-Hort, is at the Romanian tomato grower Serele Dalin in Mures. For three years they have been using the Aqua-Hort to fight the Coryne Bacteria. Since they started using the machine three years ago, the problem has not returned and the Aqua-Hort since then has been their only disease prevention measure. The company is now building a salad production facility, where an additional Aqua-Hort will be installed.

Salad and Herb production

Several growers in the region of Austria, Switzerland and Southern Germany have started to use Aqua-Hort in salad and herb production. "They were all suffering from considerable crop losses due to Phytopthora and Pythium. Since they have been using the Aqua-Hort machine, they are producing without significant losses. Some of them use inorganic media with the plants standing in trays with running water. Others grow in organic media with the use of trays or benches."
