Rungis opens first market just for organic products

Earlier this month, Marché de Rungis opened its first section just for organic produce, testimony to the growing importance of organic food in the Paris Region. “This investment gives enhanced visibility to organic products at Rungis and allows some of the wholesalers, who have been in the sector for years, to showcase their entire product range,” said Élisabeth Mercier, Director of Agence Bio.

The 5,600 m2 (60,000 ft2) organic pavilion is the largest in Europe within a wholesale market. It will be entirely dedicated to marketing organic agriculture products, and will combine, under one roof, fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy products and wine. It will also include a 400 m2 (4,300 ft2) restaurant area with an outdoor terrace measuring 100 m2 (1,100 ft2).

“By creating a space that is 100% organic, we intend to address the growing appetite of French consumers for this type of food,” said Stéphane Layani, head of Semmaris (the company that manages Rungis). “Organic products are often not given prominence in traditional shops and in markets. We now offer sourced and traced products for this category of consumers.”

With today’s favorable market environment, the tonnage of goods sold in this market is expected to double within five years.
