"NL: "Heat roundabout" to heat thousand hectares of greenhouses"

In 2020, 350,000 homes and 1,000 hectares of greenhouses should be heated, according to a Dutch program office in the province of South Holland. That is why the Office is working on the Warmterotonde ("Heat Roundabout"): an infrastructure for distributing residual heat and thermal heat through the province.

There is great potential in the re-use of residual heat which would be lost otherwise. The residual heat of the Rotterdam port alone equates to a third of the natural gas pumped up in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. Today that heat disappears unused via the air. The Warmterotonde to be developed should become a vital instrument to use energy efficiently.

What is the Warmterotonde?
The Warmterotonde is a flexible system where suppliers of (residual) heat can be linked. This can be the Rotterdam port, but it can also be industrial complexes elsewhere in the province. Also, geothermal energy can be part of the concept. The roundabout connects the Rotterdam port, the Westland and several cities with one another. This should provide sustainable heat for 350,000 homes and 1,000 hectares of greenhouse in four years. But office buildings and large hospitals are also among the potential consumers.

The cost of the whole plan is huge: 4 billion dollars. Even more impressive, is the amount of revenue: 6 billion euros. Moreover, the environmental impact of the measure is huge. Technically, the Warmterotonde is no problem. This sustainable energy regime will revolutionize the horticultural sector in the coming years.
