Russia considering lifting Turkish import ban

Russia's agricultural watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor announced on Tuesday 26 April, that if Turkey can guarantee the quality and safety of its food product imports, the body may consider lifting the ban on them.

Russian and Turkish experts met to discuss continuing phytosanitary violations.

"Rosselkhoznadzor is concerned about the continued detection of organisms considered quarantine in Russia and calls on the Turkish side to adopt the measures that would effectively guarantee the supply of products, fully compliant with the standards and requirements stipulated by the legislation of Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union. This will allow avoiding the introduction of temporarily restrictions on the new types of Turkish vegetable products," the federal service said in a statement.

The ministry added that Turkey will soon provide a detailed description of the measures taken to prevent contamination of products supplied to Russia.

"These materials will be studied by the Russian experts, who will assess the existing risks on the basis of which the Rosselkhoznadzor will adopt relevant decisions," the department stated.

Assistant head of Rosselkhoznadzor Alexey Alekseenko noted that Russia could both lift the ban on the supply or prohibit new products.

Commenting on the recent developments in the Ankara-Moscow ties, Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said on April 26 that the visit of the Turkish delegation is a step towards normalizing relations.

"Hopefully, it will bring positive results," he added.
