UK: National Living Wage resources

The changes implemented by Government to the National Living Wage (NLW) on 1 April 2016 are likely to have financial implications for UK horticultural businesses involved in fruit, vegetable, flower and plant production.

Horticultural crops have an unusually high requirement for seasonal labour, with labour cost in some cases accounting for 35-60% of business turnover. As a result, the profitability of growing horticultural crops could be sensitive to changes in wage costs. For further details of the potential, wider reaching implications of the National Living Wage see the report commissioned by NFU and produced by Andersons.

See Government's advice on the National Living Wage by clicking here.

Read the NFU's guidance here.

AHDB Horticulture has a number of resources to tackle the implications of the National Living Wage. They are also funding/have funded multiple projects that have led to labour efficiencies using new technologies, energy cost savings and efficiencies on crop protection costs.
