Second phase scheduled for late spring:

US(IL): Things going better than expected at MightyVine

North America's newest year round greenhouse tomato grower MightyVine will start the construction of their second 7.5 acre phase late spring. MightyVine's chairman Jim Murphy told the Chicago Tribune that the grower is doubling its operation to meet rising demand in grocery stores and restaurants in the Chicago area.

MightyVine tomatoes are sold in stores including Jewel-Osco, Whole Foods Market and Treasure Island, and used in more than 100 restaurants in the Chicago area, Murphy said.

This summer will be the real test for MightyVine sales, when heirloom and backyard tomatoes are abundantly available. "Managing the greenhouse temperature and plant nutrient levels will also be a challenge on hot summer days and nights," said Nic Helderman, MightyVine's chief operating officer. "Whenever you start a new company, it's always a lot of work," said Helderman, 54, a Dutch native and lifelong greenhouse grower. "But I would say it's gone better than expected. I haven't talked to anyone who doesn't like our tomatoes."

According to the article in the Chicago Tribune, the construction costs for the second greenhouse will run about $6 million, with some of the financing coming from a farm credit service. Another 30 or so people will be hired, in addition to the 40 who already work there.
