UK: Rothamsted Research to replace HPS lights with Attis LED lamps

Rothamsted Research in Harpenden, UK, has increased the deployment of PhytoLux’s Attis Plant Growth lights in their 2 acre glasshouse facility and is planning to replace the majority of the site’s 2,000 High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lights over time. Julian Franklin, Head of the Horticultural and Controlled Environment Department at the facility, has been working with PhytoLux for 5 years in supporting the development of a generic LED plant growth lamp. This has proven to produce results that are comparative or better than those achieved by the traditional HPS lamp solution, whilst delivering a substantial energy saving.

Julian explains; “We have been working closely with PhytoLux since 2011, seeking an LED solution that would produce a light response comparative to that achieved by HPS lights in the majority of plant species, whilst at the same time reducing energy costs by 60%. We are now confident that this has been achieved and have agreed a budget to roll out a further 385 units in March, with plans to replace the majority of our HPS lights in the future”.

Steve Edwards, founder and Managing Director of PhytoLux comments; “I am delighted that Rothamsted are widening the use of our Attis LED lights based on the positive results we have achieved. These results are being mirrored in similar trials with a large number of other UK organisations which is good news for the industry”.
