US (WV): Snow crushes greenhouse; lettuce crop tossed

A brand-new 160-foot-long commercial greenhouse in Morgan County was one of the casualties of last week’s major snowstorm.

Paul Mock discovered the damage on Saturday, January 23, as he started to plow snow from around his greenhouse operation.

The structure is one of six connected greenhouses that Mock recently added to meet growing demand for his hydroponic vegetables. Because the greenhouses are tied together, the collapse affected the “climate” of all of the houses. Mock had to shut off heat to the greenhouses, and lost 25,000 lettuce plants as a result.

Mock said his insurance company is calculating losses and coverage for the collapse.

He will have to cut back supply to some of his retail vendors in order to make up for the loss of his crop. The 2016 tomato crop wasn’t affected by the damage, he said.
