Canadian indoor farm Local By Atta destroyed by devastating fire

A fire has destroyed the Canadian indoor farm Local By Atta, a vertical grower of organic greens in Moncton, New Brunswick. The devastating fire has destroyed the growing produce business owned by brothers Julian and Jesse Howatt, forcing them to start all over again from the ground up.

The two brothers started “Local by Atta” two years ago. The pair sell organic, locally grown greens to high-end restaurants in Greater Moncton, and were planning an expansion. The Howatt’s grew and sold $100,000 a year worth of lettuce, basil, Swiss chard and micro-greens.

The fire destroyed at least $10,000 worth of crops they had just planted. The growers are hoping to salvage some of their equipment, which is covered by insurance, in an effort to get back on their feet.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
