High prices expected
First Spanish strawberries arrive at the German market
The first Spanish strawberries are expected in Germany this week. Since week 48 there were only Egyptian strawberries available states a German wholesaler and importer.
The Californian variety Fortuna is the most cultivated variety in Spain. And about three weeks ago the harvest of the first strawberries started. “The production in Spain started with small amounts,” says the trader, “But the production has increased to a level that enables export to other European countries.”
The importer expects high prices. “The cost prices of the strawberries will probably be very high,” states the expert. “Only if the supply to Germany is very large will the prices drop. And with the demand in the supermarkets that will be quite substantial. He states: ”The quality of the fruit is good. We have no complaints about that.”
