Thanks to a grant worth more than $78,000 from the State Farm Youth Advisory Board, Brooks Global Studies will be able to build a greenhouse, purchase equipment and conduct lessons about food disparity in Greensboro.
Brooks Global was one of 62 schools chosen out of 850 applicants nationwide. It was one of four chosen from North Carolina and the only school from Guilford County.
“There is a population of 280,000 people in Greensboro, and there are eight food deserts, where people have lower access to transportation and are over a mile from a grocery store, and more obesity, diabetes and heart disease are found in food deserts,” said Brooks academically gifted teacher Sandra Lubchenko, who applied for the grant.
