The office for the declaration of damage to agricultural infrastructure of the City of El Ejido, Almeria, opened following the heavy rains of 7 September, has so far estimated the damage to greenhouse infrastructure at 130 hectares, with 77 kilometres of rural roads affected also by structural problems.
This was revealed by sources of El Ejido's Council, which stated that two weeks after the opening of the office intended to help those affected, 123 growers have already presented damage reports.
The Agriculture Councilman of the City of El Ejido, Manuel Gómez Galera, said that "the rural road network has also suffered significant damage, mainly in the area of Balerma, Matagorda y Guardias Viejas, Las Norias and San Augustine, where 15 kilometres of roads and highways have been affected, with another 20 kilometres with structural damage."
Gómez Galera explained that "since the setting up of the office on 8 September, many growers have approached it to report the damage to their farms and greenhouses, which have been completely destroyed in some cases; others have suffered the impact of flooding."
The municipal mayor stressed that "this is an initial estimate of the damage to both private estates and public infrastructure which we've sent a few days ago to the territorial delegation of the Council of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development in order to establish aid lines to help mitigate, as far as possible, the impact of the damage caused by the heavy rains," which as recalled by Gómez Galera, reached 47 litres per square metre.
