US (NC): Severe drought across WNC affects nurseries, farms

The United States Drought Monitor now shows southern Buncombe, Haywood, Jackson, McDowell and all of Henderson and Transylvania counties in severe drought.

At Jessie Israel and Sons Nursery on Brevard Road, Alan Israel isn’t about to let the third generation family business’s inventory turn brown.

"I’m just doing a little bit of hand watering right now,” said Isreal. “Each individual plant at certain parts of the day will need more water than others.”

The nursery is using overhead sprinklers in the early morning for up to 45 minutes to drop .25” of water on the plants because there is no precipitation coming from the sky. Fortunately the weekend forecast is calling for rain.
