US (IN): Couple to build aquaponics greenhouse in their backyard
A Goshen couple will begin operating an aquaponics business at their home beginning this fall or winter.Noah and Ruth Smucker, 1628 S. Eighth St., received a five-year approval from the Goshen Board of Zoning Appeals Tuesday to erect a commercial greenhouse to replace their garage. The Smuckers said they will raise vegetables, mostly greens, using a water-based nutrient system that contains a few blue tilapia fish.
The couple told the board members they have “a homesteading mentality” and want to try the aquaponics business on their property at the corner of College Avenue before possibly relocating and expanding it after the five-year period.
The Smuckers belong to the Economy of Communion in Freedom movement. That Christian organization has the goal of using business to help people in need. They said professional practices set by the organization will govern their aquaponics business.
