Every drop counts: Making the most of April showers

It’s been a very long, cold and snowy winter! We’re so glad that it’s finally April and the fluffy white stuff is starting to melt away. Did you know that throughout the year, Madison, Maine sees about 47 inches of precipitation, and most of that comes from snow? That’s a lot of water!

In order to make good use of all the snowfall, Backyard Farms works hard to meet almost all of their water needs by reclaiming that snow and rain.

During the winter our greenhouse temperature stays at a balmy 72 degrees, so the snow melts pretty quickly. The heated gutters on top of the greenhouse make sure the snow doesn't pile up too high. We capture the water from the snow and rain by funneling it into our irrigation pond, and then bring the water from the pond into the greenhouse, where it is mixed with fertilizer and dripped into our plants. We even recycle the water the plants don't drink and use it to water them another time – so every drop really does count!

Although the snow is on its way out, we still plan to make the most of the April showers by continuing our reclamation practices. Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain!
