Organic anti mould treatment for splitbamboo sticks

Splitbamboo sticks are used on a large scale in horticulture, but as they tend to get moulded in wet or outdoor cultivation, it can form a risk for the grower. That is why Van Nifterik improved the anti mould treatment of the split bamboo. The first results are very promising.

In horticulture lots of split-bamboo flower-sticks are used; in phalaenopsis and vegetable youngplants billions of sticks are used yearly. But splitbamboo is also used more and more in the cultivation of potted plants, climbing plants, shrubs and fruit plants.

Unfortunately split-bamboo tends to get moulded especially in a wet or outdoor cultivation. Therefor some kind of treatment was created in China years ago to prevent this moulding, but unfortunately this treatment was not sufficient enough.

As said before, the demand for split-bamboo only increases, because the small tonkin canes that were used mostly for outdoor cultivation become more scarce and the quality isn’t as good as years ago due to local consumption.

"The only alternative for that option is to use split-bamboo, but split-bamboo tends to get moulded and black and for that a new solution was needed, said Rene Ratterman of Van Nifterik. "Consumers don’t accept mould on sticks of their beautiful orchid or on the sticks with their fruit-plant!"

After years of trying and testing van Nifterik Holland BV succeeded in finding a solution to prevent this mould on split-bamboo now. "This has been tested thoroughly, at first at the cultivation of orchids for over almost two years and after the results were sattisfying, the tests started for other cultivations. Again this was very successful, no black or hairy sticks anymore! When you walk into a gardencenter it is directly clear which sticks are treated and which not!", Ratterman said.

The treatment is completely orbganic, environmental friendly but also friendly for the people who have to work with these sticks.
