UK: NFT tomato crop at R&L Holt discussed with training group

On Thursday 26th February 2015, the sixth May Barn Consultancy Ltd training event on Hydroponics and Plant Nutrition took place at R&L Holt, Evesham. As part of the training, the growers and researchers were able to see the latest developments in tomato production, using Nutrient Film Technique, new glasshouses and LED lighting.

Crops at two distinct growth stages (established phase, with 3 set trusses at Springhill Nurseries) and also the mature, overwintered crops (under hybrid sodium top lighting and LED interlighting at Sandylands Nurseries) were visited by the training group. This allowed clear demonstration of some of the important, fundamental points of direct relevance to running hydroponic systems for a range of crops, such as pH control, EC manipulation and variation in the potassium to nitrogen balance, the latter to generatively steer plant growth.

Interest in the event ranged from established glasshouse salad crop growers and long season glasshouse flower producers, to prospective salad leaf and micro-green/herb growers. The group also included a contingent from Grodan, Poland.
