2SaveEnergy greenhouse:

New, insulating greenhouse roof consists of glass, foil and cavity

The new 2SaveEnergy greenhouse cover consists of an outer layer of clear glass with a two-sided AR-coating and a lower layer of diffuse F-CLEAN foil with a vent in between. This isolates almost as well as multi-coated double glazed, but claims to be lighter and cheaper. This 2SaveEnergy® is the first greenhouse roof that combines high insulation and high light transmission in an affordable way.

The concept was developed by a consortium of companies consisting of VDH Foliekassen, Van der Valk Systemen, Boal Systemen and foil manufacturer AGC in cooperation with research institute of Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture.

Cavity deck
The high insulation value of the roof stems from the cavity between the glass and the F-CLEAN foil. This highly transparent foil retains its anti-fogging effect for at least ten years.

The profiles are equipped with guiding grooves, which hold the foil firmly in place, directly under the roof bars. This creates an air gap of about 5 cm.

Ventilation provides advantages

A special feature of 2SaveEnergy is the cavity ventilation with greenhouse air. This deck can be kept free of ice and snow. In order to allow ventilation, the gutters have openings to the cavity, allowing for small fans to be attached, blowing air back into the greenhouse.

Trial greenhouse
2SaveEnergy is a relatively new concept. On the grounds of Wageningen UR, a test greenhouse was constructed, in which cucumbers are grown according to the principles of "The New Cultivation”. At a later stage, the greenhouse concept is tested with tomato crops. The first test results in the field of light transmission, capacity and energy are promising.
