US: Sunnyside peppers shipped off to market

Sunnyside Transformation Yakima Valley cultivated more than 7,400 pounds of hot wax peppers this past summer, which were harvested by hand and will be sold under the “Mama Lil’s” label to restaurants on the East Coast and in the Southern states.

According to Roberto Matus, director of Sunnyside Transformation Yakima Valley, the entire process of getting the peppers ready for sale was done by hand, from picking to removing seeds and packing into 15-lb. buckets.

Growing the peppers was part of the youth ranch project, which allows local youngsters to work in the garden to earn community service hours. The sale of the peppers will support the program next year.

In addition to peppers, the youth ranch also grew strawberries this past summer. Sunnyside Transformation Yakima Valley also makes a community garden available at the same location, next to the Sunnyside Christian Reformed Church.
