Kagome to build first Ultra Clima greenhouse in Japan

Kagome is one of the leading greenhouse growers in Japan that wants to move forward by adapting the latest technology into their operations. In order to realize a more energy efficient production, they have decided to realize a semi-closed greenhouse in Akeno at Hokuto city located in the Yamanashi Prefecture. The greenhouse, a 1.9 hectare Ultra Clima structure of KUBO, will reduce the consumption of energy by approximately 50% compared to a traditional greenhouse.

Kagome's Taizo Sano and Satoshi Harrada are proud to be the first growers in Japanese horticulture that have access to this state of the art production technology. With operations in Australia and Japan, Kagome can be seen as one of the most progressive greenhouse growers in Asia Pacific. This is why the Ultra Clima greenhouse is the next logical step for the growers.

Kagome's Taizo Sano visited several semi-closed greenhouse structures around the world before he eventually decided to pick KUBO's design. After visiting Houweling's patented Semi Closed Ultra-Clima greenhouse in the Southern California desert, Kagome's staff decided to give KUBO the order to design a structure according to their needs.

KUBO welcomed the challenge of constructing this high-tech greenhouse in accordance with strict earthquake-resistance standards. Japanese construction standards can be difficult to reconcile with large greenhouses made of steel, aluminium and glass. KUBO has succeeded in designing the 7-metre high greenhouse in accordance with strict Japanese construction standards, without having to make any significant concessions to the functionality of the greenhouse.

At the GPEC conference in Tokyo last month, Taizo Sano of Kagome informed us that the grounds at Akeno are now being prepared for the construction and the base is being realized. Kagome expects the structure to be completed in December 2014. The 1.9 hectare Ultra-Clima is phase one, and might be followed by additional phases in the coming years. The total site of phase one is 3 hectares, including packing facility and technical buildings. KUBO is working closely with the Japanese greenhouse construction company Daisen on the project.

With operations in Australia and Japan, Kagome can be seen as one of the most progressive greenhouse growers in Asia Pacific. Kagome Japan has around 55 hectare of modern Venlo type greenhouses including their contract growers. Next to this, there are also smaller Japanese contract growers with a total acreage of 30 hectares. Just like in the greenhouses in China, Kagome takes advantage of modern production technologies and uses high end facilities. (Click here to read more about the company in an previous released story on HortiDaily as they explained why they grow almost 80 % of their hydroponic crops on Riococo coir slabs.)
