Canada: Alberta Ag's updates crop protection Blue Book
“An important component of the annual update is the addition of newly registered products,” says Mark Cutts, crop specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. “For the 2014 Blue Book there were several new pesticide entries added. New products were added to the four pesticide sections (herbicides, insecticides, seed treatments and foliar fungicides) in the publication. The newly registered foliar fungicides cover a wide range of crops and diseases. For the new seed treatments entries, active ingredients have been added to previously registered seed treatments to provide additional disease control. There has also been the addition of new seed treatment products that are registered for (1) early season wireworm protection in cereals and (2) cutworm control in oilseed crops. The new herbicide entries included products registered for use as pre-seed, in-crop, chemical fallow and post-harvest.”
A limited number of new active ingredients were added to the 2014 Crop Protection publication. This continues the recent trend where the majority of new products consist of (1) active ingredients that are already available through previously registered products or (2) new mixes of existing products. “It is important to recognize this trend when selecting pesticides,” notes Cutts. “Producers should continue to purchase pesticide products based on chemical group and active ingredient. Purchasing pesticides products based on newly registered product names could lead to repeated use of a chemical group and increase the risk of developing pesticide resistance.”
