Spain: Winds destroy greenhouses in Almeria

Strong winds caused by a tornado destroyed several greenhouses in the Almerian town of La Mojonera. According to estimations from Asaja-Almeria, around 15 hectares have been affected, with damages to plastic sheeting, windows and some of the crops.

The damages entail huge additional costs to producers, as the price of plastic sheeting stands at around 10,000 Euro per hectare, plus labour and reparation costs.

ASAJA recommends the growers affected to report the extent of their damages to the organisation so that compensations may be requested. It will also offer advice to those seeking to undertake a modernisation plan.

The organisation reminded that wind damage is covered by the agricultural insurance system, as the insurance for greenhouse plantations includes an option to insure the structure, and this is also the case for insurances offered by private companies. ASAJA strongly advises greenhouse growers to insure their structures to prevent the huge costs that such wind storms can cause. The organisation has agreements with a number of insurance companies to make it possible for growers to obtain reduced premiums.
