Jiffy and Coletta & Tyson nurseries introduce 'teabag technology' for bedding plants
B&Q, the largest garden retailer in the UK, selling 140m bedding plants annually, started rolling out the program calling it ‘EasyGrow with Teabag Technology’.
The new bedding plant packs consists of a new developed tray, made of a 100% recyclable RPET material containing ‘Growblocks’ enclosed by a biodegradable 'teabag' made from corn starch, a fully compostable renewable resource.
The’ Growblocks’ itself are 100% RHP certified coir and produced at Jiffy’s Sri Lanka manufacturing site. Coir is a natural fibre extracted from coconut husks.
Jiffy started its coir manufacturing in Mirigana, Sri Lanka in 2004, with the desire to provide the horticultural industry with a sustainable, renewable, natural resource. Starting out with producing Jiffy 7C, a 100% coir pellet, Jiffy introduced the Jiffy Growbag and Growblock system to the global hydroponic industry in around 2008.
With the introduction of B&Q’s EasyGrow, Jiffy now moves into the bedding plant segment with its 100% coir blocks.
The desire in the UK to reduce the use of peat through the introduction of alternative growing media, convinced B&Q it should play a leading role finding and offering such an alternative to its customers.
By introducing the new coir blocks for bedding plants in the UK, B&Q has taken a major step in reaching its goal.
