30% water savings thanks to Dutch technology used at South African lettuce nursery

The province of Gauteng has one of South Africa’s most sustainable lettuce nurseries: Jomajoco. This company produces lettuce for Woolworths, the country's largest supermarket chain. As part of their “Farming for the future” program, there is a high demand on quality and sustainability for all participants. It is for this reason that Jomajoco relies on highly innovative technology, as provided by Hoogendoorn automation, so that fertilizer, chemicals and water input can be kept to a minimum.

Located near Krugerdorp, South Africa, the Jomajoco lettuce farm is run by Johan van de Bosch, producing 9.5 hectares of lettuce undercover and 7 hectares in the open field. Jomajoco is one of 96 participants in the Woolworths “Farming for the future” program, which places significant emphasis on limiting the use of resources and chemicals, without causing adverse effects on quality and costs. There is also the added social advantage that Jomajoco offers good employment opportunities to all local population sectors.

Sustainable production methods

Lettuce cultivated undercover is not grown in the ground, but inside growing gutters. This means less water and fertilizers are required for production. Jomajoco is able to use this sustainable production method thanks to employing advanced Dutch technology. The patented irrigation unit by Bosman is one example of these installations. It allows for the removal of carbonates from water and in turn a better mix of water and fertilizer. Experience has shown that this reduces fertilizer use by at least 10%.

Increased yield per m2

A Hoogendoorn iSii computer is used to control overall water management. This user-friendly computer makes it possible to adjust the supply from various water sources to the needs of the plant. In addition, the iSii ensures that any water not absorbed by the plants is collected, disinfected and reused. Thanks to recirculation and providing water exactly in accordance with plant needs, Jomajoco has been able to achieve a considerable increase in yield per m2 and to decrease water use by 30% (compared to open field cultivation).

Food safety and security

In co-operation with horticultural entrepreneurs, the “Farming for the future” program aims to produce food in harmony with nature to ensure African farms will be able to produce enough food for future generations. Program manager Kobus Pienaar is enthusiastic about the way Dutch companies are able to adjust to local needs and co-operate within this successful program. Together we are working on a healthy, food-safe and environmentally friendly production.
