Netherlands: Eggplant growers and TTO make progress in New Cultivation

Dutch eggplant growers are putting their chips on "The New cultivation". Last November, at Kwekerij Greenbrothers in Zevenbergen, the Adele and Beyonce varieties were planted.

The goal of the study is to explore the possibilities of The New Cultivation in eggplant cultivation. An increase in production is attempted while reducing energy consumption with 25% at the same time. “It’s getting to be a pretty exciting time,” says one of the growers. "There's a lot of crop which is starting to evaporate significantly. We follow the process exactly. We visit the greenhouse every six weeks."

It’s still too soon to draw any conclusions, but a lot of knowledge is being exchanged and progress has been made in regard to energy reduction.

The project, which will run for two years, has been set up and is supervised by producers’ organization TTO. TTO was founded four years ago to tackle technical innovation together. The growing association (all primary businesses) has nationwide coverage and represents 10% of the horticultural community.
