"The grower is key. He is in need of a better market and a good crop yield." A vision outlining the chief mission at Schoneveld Breeding, known for its Cyclamen, Primula, Ranunculus and Campanula. Peter van de Pol has been at the helm since 2007.
Investing in the right things
Good genetics, that’s where it starts. “But there’s more to it,” says Van de Pol. The company also provides support in cultivation, marketing and sales. “It’s important not to skip any steps and invest at the right time. Also, we want to add value to floriculture by creating smart partnerships. When introducing new varieties, we are focusing more and more on the market. Moreover, it is of great importance to tell the story behind the genetics: we want the consumer to know where the product comes from. But also increased attention to shelf life, sustainable production, transportability and other aspects of the supply chain.”
Crossing borders
Van de Pol: “The demand for our genetics has more than doubled in recent years. Quality and delivery reliability can sometimes suffer rapidly when dealing with growing demand. That is why we invested in a cutting-edge production site with an ideal climate. This also allows us to look abroad.”
Now Schoneveld has a modern greenhouse in Tanzania, with local management. A part of the production was transferred. This way, the Twello location made more room for breeding and processing new pot plant varieties.
However, activities across the border go much further. Schoneveld has flower trials in Italy, California, China and South America, determining the suitability of its genetics under local conditions in agreement with the grower.
