Almeria, Andalusia

Spain: Greenhouse plant waste processing campaign underway

The plant waste processing campaign has already started in El Ejido, Almeria, with the meeting of the Plant Waste Monitoring Commission, maintaining the goal of improving the capacity and operability of waste collection plants.

El Ejido's councillor of Agriculture and Environment, Manuel Gómez Galera, insisted that only 50% of the area's needs are currently covered, making it thus "necessary to work on new plants." He reminded that the primary goal is "to make good quality organic material available and continue developing an increasingly more sustainable and commercially attractive model of intensive agriculture."

El Ejido's plant has an innovative pre-treatment system which starts with the chopping of the plant material in preparation for its turning into compost. While the process is more expensive, the increase in the compost's quality outweighs the higher cost. This year, preparations are being made to chop and transform into compost around 300,000 cubic metres of plant waste.

For its part, the Environmental Association of Las Chozas, founded a little less than a year ago, has gradually adjusted its compost production procedures with the transformation of close to 40,000 tonnes.

ECONER's representative gave details on the project for the transformation of plant waste into compost using American red worms; a product known as vermicompost, which was recently presented to El Ejido's government team.
