Over 211 million tonnes of tomatoes produced worldwide
The world's fresh tomato production volumes stood at 211,021,843 tonnes in 2012, according to data provided by the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This represents a 2.2% increase compared to 2011 and confirms the yearly upward trend.
China is the world's largest producer, with 50,125,055 tonnes; 23.75% of the total. It is followed by India, with a total of 17,500,000 tonnes; 8.29% and the third place is for the United States, which produced more than 13 million tonnes of tomatoes in 2012 (13,206,950); 6.26% of the total.
The fourth place in the ranking was for Turkey, with 11,350,000 tonnes; 5.38%. Egypt stood fifth, with 8,625,219 tonnes (4.09%) and the sixth position was for Iran, with 6,000,000 tonnes (2.84%). Italy was the seventh largest producer, with 5,131,977 tonnes (2.43%), followed by Spain in eighth position with 4,007,000 tonnes (1.9%) and Brazil in ninth place with 3,873,985 tonnes, 1.63% of the world's fresh tomato production.
