CN Seeds utilises Fruit Logistica to explore overseas expansion

UK-based CN Seeds used its appearance at the recent Fruit Logistica 2014 trade exhibition in Berlin to establish contact with growers from as far afield as New Zealand, Kazakhstan and Iran, as its looks to expand its business into new markets.

CN Seeds’ Craig Thomas said: “It was another great show for the company – all three days were very busy, and we had some very interesting meetings. The show seems to attract more customers from our home turf, UK and Ireland, every year, but for us the opportunity to meet with growers from all over the globe is invaluable.
We can discuss their needs and also find out just how their markets react to our products, which helps us shape our research programmes.”

Innovation recognition
CN Seeds was proud to be associated with the runner up product for the prestigious 2014 Fruit Logistica Innovation Award, the prize handed out at the show each year which recognises innovative new products in the fresh produce sector.

The new Oriental salad produced by Home Harvest Salads of Hull was awarded second place in the competition. This novel Living Salad offers consumers the opportunity to buy a tray of growing plants, ready to harvest at home whenever required. Grown exclusively under glass in Yorkshire, the Oriental salad combines several new varieties from the CN stable, chosen for reliability and uniformity of growth in this unique format.

Stand highlights
Other highlights from CN Seeds’ appearance at this year’s Fruit Logistica included its new wild rocket Monza, a quick growing variety that looks very promising for early season production and has excellent leaf quality.

CN Seeds has also been working to improve its coriander range through the launch of a new variety, Cadiz, this year, which has already delivered positive results in both pot and field trials. “Cadiz is a cilantro with compact habit and nice big, dark green leaves, which has a consistently good flavour, while bolting tolerance – an important factor for coriander growers – is strong,” said Thomas.

Babyleaf Kale, another of CN Seeds’ star products, was also strongly in evidence at the show, with the company highlighting the fact that the brand looks set to make strides in the UK, Scandinavian, Australian and New Zealand markets following its success in the US1. Among the Babyleaf kale2 offering was Jagallo Nero, a distinctively-shaped variety with eye-catching serrated leaves that is already proving popular with US consumers. Commercial trials for Jagallo Nero are expected to begin in the UK and Europe in early 2015.
